Seeing Mum Out
…. Her eyes widen, she wants me to share her disbelief. I’ve heard all these remarks many times so I can’t play this game any more. She’ll speak then to someone standing close by. She wants to ally herself with others, against this tide of exotic produce, trying to prove to me that she’s not the only one who won’t buy or need mangoes or pickled walnuts. They smile, the people she speaks to, or they might nod and sometimes they briefly raise their eyes to mine, before pushing their trolleys away…..

Carolyn graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2003 with an MPhil in Writing following a degree in English from the University of the West of England. Her work has been published in: Mslexia, QWF magazine, Honno, Accent Press and her stories have appeared in a number of anthologies. In 2001 she won the Lichfield Prize and in 2002 won the Philip Good Award.
She lectures part time in creative writing and takes writing workshops into local secondary schools.
